On Ubuntu, you have to run commands with python3 and pip3

Config files can be created at:

~/yt-dlp.conf for user-specific config
/etc/yt-dlp.conf for system-wide config

Here’s my sample config

Why a MacBook (and the Apple ecosystem)

Why i wanted to get a MacBook is a question i get often. The simple reason is this: i’m a designer developer combo, and the Apple ecosystem serves me well.

The development is good on Linux (Ubuntu), but limited because you can’t test or run iOS apps.

And the design also works with Figma (which i absolutely love because it is awesome and works on Linux and that they have a free version!), but is limited when it comes to image editing. You can’t beat Photoshop and Illustrator with Figma when it comes to designing custom illustrations and editing rastor photos. For example, you can’t even add a drop shadow to the shape of an object inside and image in Figma, it’ll just add the shadow to the entire image, i.e. a square shadow around the borders of the image file instead of the object inside it. Designing icons and logos which involve custom shapes is possible with Figma, but sub-optimal. You can’t use Figma for illustrations if you are serious about your illustration work.

MacBook Pro - Apple Silicon M1 experience

It FINALLY got delivered. I had ordered it back in December, it got delivered to Dubai in January, and then someone brought it from Dubai to Pakistan in February. The lengths you go to get a custom MacBook. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ In Pakistan, only the base models are officially available. What i got is considered a custom order and you have to pay 100% in advance and wait a few weeks at least. Mine comes with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, with an extended AppleCare+ plan.

Sass vs. styled-components

bundle size and load time
redux is 44.3kb minified and 16.2kb minified and gzipped. It’ll take 0.54ms to load on 2G EDGE connection and 324ms to load on emerging 3G.
Sass is supported out of the box with create-react-app
Sass is mostly known, no learning curves
Moving back to plain old CSS is easy
If you use CSS variables in the app-wide CSS file, you don’t have to import the variables file in all the other files
Importing partials seems to be an issue to me at the moment. Do we import partials inside the component stylesheets? In every component?
styled-components can take props
styled-components are contained in the same file. No more opening the styles file to the side. No more creating separate files for every component
will result in simpler folder structure as i won’t have to create a folder for every component just so i could keep the files together. And i wouldn’t have to name the component files inside the folder as index.js either, which makes differentiating between the tabs in code editor a nightmare, i have to hover on every file to see the path and know which component file is that particular index.js is. At any time i have 3-12 index.js files open

Named destination in PDF on Linux

You can link to a portion of a PDF just like you link to a portion of the webiste using anchor tags. In PDFs, the term named destinations is used for such anchor tags.

Renaming bookmarks

The document usually has automatically generated bookmarks. Their names are usually obnoxious though, like_ Toc527397839. You can rename them for better usability.

You have to do this in the doc file before exporting it as PDF

Orange Pi+ 2 - Getting started and headaches

While the Orange Pi+ 2 has better hardware, the software support for it sucks.

What came pre-installed

An Android looking OS that has 5 icons, but none of the icons open anything or go anywhre

So far i have tried 2 different images (Ubuntu Xenial and Debian , both mainline kernels), none of them gave me a display. I go as far as loading kernel, and then the screen goes black with the monitor displaying an out of range message. The monitor i have is Asus VX24AH (WQHD / 2K resolution).

I converted to a Mac __ years ago. And i can’t see myself going back to Windows or a non-Apple laptop.

The software i use is already available for Mac. I’m a web developer, i have everything i need already on my Mac. The only software i ever. For everything else, there is either a Mac version available or an alternative available. In some cases i found that the Mac version of the same software looks better than it’s Windows counterpart. Evernote for Mac looked better than it’s Windows counterpart for a long time before they updated the looks of the Windows version.

Steganogrophy

Steganography is hiding data inside of other data. Hiding information inside of something else. For example, having text hidden inside of an image. It could also be an image inside of another image. It’s really just hididng one piece of data inside another piece of data.

It’s a quick way of sending messages to people without actually having the message seen. You’d have an arrangement with a friend where you’d send them an image, it’d have a messae hidden in it and they’d know to open the image in their steganography program, and it’d display the text for them.
